Featured Birth: Baby Isaac, OU Children’s Hospital, OKC

I met Jennifer and Jon when I was filming a commercial last year. They were kind enough to volunteer their four children to play the part of school children, and Jennifer played the teacher. Her children were the sweetest and best behaved little actors ever and Jennifer wasn’t bad herself. Her kids were all pretty close in age so they filled my classroom out just right.

It turns out, this sweet couple had always wanted children, but after years of trying had given up on the possibility. But they are Christians who believe in the commands of Christ to care for the orphan and the fatherless, so they decided to adopt. All of their little ones,  (now ages 6, 8, 8, and 10) were about 5 when they found their forever home with Jennifer and Jon.

And then, like a miracle… Jennifer got pregnant!

Jennifer told the staff at OU Children’s Hospital as we all waited for their fifth child to arrive, that the Lord had closed her womb just so she would meet those sweet little ones who would become her first four.

I got the text from her dad, a friend of mine, that she was going into labor around 11 p.m. Normally, I would wait to start heading toward Oklahoma City for the birth until she was closer to 5 centimeters, but I wanted to make sure I didn’t miss a moment so I headed toward the hospital almost immediately. And I’m glad I did!

Don’t get me wrong, it was a long night… Isaac didn’t come til more than 12 hours later. But it was a beautiful night. Jennifer had the cutest contraction face of all time, and a sweet, supportive friend, Sarah, who stayed and offered conversation, advice, back rubs, and errand runs. Jennifer was the most cheerful laboring mama ever. In between every contraction she just laughed and talked and was constantly smiling.

As the contractions progressed from mild to not-so-mild, we all felt sure that it was going to be relatively quick. So we were surprised when nurses persisted in telling us every few hours that she was still 2 centimeters. Eventually, ever so slowly, she progressed to 4. Things slowed down. We all tried to rest… Sarah and I positioned in the straight backed chairs on either side of mama’s bed, and dad sleeping nearby.

I had nodded off when the nurse came in and announced that Jennifer was ready to go. I went from half asleep to action in about 0 seconds flat, just in time to capture Jen’s delighted and surprised face at the news.

An hour or so of hard pushing later, and I got to witness these sweet parents shed tears of joy as they finally met their long-awaited little treasure.
